Strong Easter Trading for Australian Retail Results: April Sales Down Only 1%

Comparison Period: The following insights are based on comparing the four-week retail month of April this year (31 Mar – 27 Apr 2025) to the same period last year (1 Apr – 28 Apr 2024).

Keep in mind; April 2024 does not include Good Friday (29 March 2024) and Easter Sunday (31 March 2024) but these two dates are captured in the April 2025 results. This means April 2025 has 1-2 less trading days than April 2024, impacting year-on-year comparisons.

Foot Traffic Trends:

  • Passer-by traffic was flat in April YoY and is up 1.3% over the last 3 months.
  • Inside traffic was down 0.8% YoY in April but is up 0.3% over the last 3 months.
  • Comparing the two-week Easter period, inside traffic was up 1.2% YoY.

Sales Conversion Performance:

  • Sales conversion continues to remain weak, down 1.1% YoY in April (-0.6% across the last 3 months).
  • Comparing the two-week Easter period, sales conversion was down 2.0% YoY.

Transactions:

  • Transaction volumes were down 1.9% YoY in April and are more or less flat over the last 3 months.

Average Transaction Values (ATVs):

  • ATVs grew 1.0% YoY in April and averaged +2.7% YoY over the last 3 months.
  • ATV growth in April was driven by increased basket size rather than higher prices.

Sales Performance:

  • Overall sales declined 0.9% YoY in April (+1.5% YoY over the last 3 months).
  • Comparing the two-week Easter period, sales were up 2.3% YoY, driven by strong growth in ATVs (+3.1% YoY).  Both metro areas (+2.4%) and regional areas (+1.7%) experienced good year-on-year growth.
