Australian Retail Sales Up on Last Year for Five Months in a Row

  • October managed to deliver a modest year-on-year growth in Australian retail sales, up 0.4% YoY. However, it was very much a month of two halves – with a strong start and a very weak end.
  • Overall, Australian retail foot traffic in October was similar to September.  Passer-by traffic was down 8.4% YoY in October (8.5% in September). Inside Store Traffic was down 4.0% YoY in October (-3.8% in September).
  • However, the final two weeks of October tell a gloomier story. Passer-by traffic was down 9.9% and -11.1% YoY in the final two weeks, and Inside Story Traffic was down  
    -7.2% and -9.1% YoY. It appears consumers are shopping less as we get closer to the upcoming Black Friday sales period in late November.
  • Transaction volumes were down 3.5% YoY in October (-3.9% in September)Transaction volumes peaked in the second week of October (+3.8% YoY) but deteriorated to -9.6% YoY in the final week of October.
  • Average Transaction Values remained in positive territory throughout October, averaging +4.0% (+4.2% in September)The average price per item sold in October was up 4.8% YoYWe have now seen Average Transaction Values in positive territory for twelve consecutive months.
  • Sales were up a modest 0.4% YoY in October, slightly better than the +0.1% YoY growth in August and September. Sales have now grown for five consecutive months.
