Australian Retail Sales Up Year-on-Year for Four Consecutive Months
- Australian retail foot traffic was slightly weaker in September compared to August. Passer-by traffic was down 8.5% YoY, compared to -8.2% in August. Inside Store Traffic was down 3.3% YoY (compared to -1.9% in August).
- Transaction volumes were down 3.8% YoY in September, due to the 3.3% drop in store traffic combined with a 0.5% YoY decline in Sales Conversion (a deterioration from +0.1% YoY in August).
- Average Transaction Values were up strongly in September (+4.2% YoY), compared to +1.9% YoY in August. The average price per item sold in September was up 5.4% YoY. We have now seen Average Transaction Values in positive territory for eleven consecutive months.
- Sales were up a modest 0.2% YoY in September, slightly better than the +0.1% YoY growth in August. Sales have now grown for four consecutive months.
- After a solid start to the financial year, we have seen retail foot traffic and sales deteriorate as the quarter has progressed. Inside Store Traffic was +0.9% in July but weakened to -1.9% in August and -3.3% in September. Similarly, Sales was +2.0% in July and weakened to +0.1% in August and 0.2% in September. Sales managed to remain in positive territory due to the strong growth in average item prices (+3.0% in July; +3.2% in August; and +5.4% in September).
- The Outlook for Q1 that we shared in our recent Webinar estimated Inside Traffic to be between -0.2% and +1.9% YoY (the actual result was -1.6%, as Passer-by Traffic was weaker than expected) and Sales to be between 0.0% and +2.1% YoY (the actual result was +0.7%, as ATVs were slightly stronger than expected).
